Desert safari with children: transfers, dunes and the camp

Updated October 8, 2026 · 6 min read

Sand dunes glowing in late-afternoon light, with four-wheel-drive vehicles following a ridge

A family desert safari is not one activity. It is a road transfer from Dubai, a driven section on dunes and, on many evening products, a camp programme. A child may enjoy two parts and hate the third, so read the schedule rather than the headline.

Start with total duration

The desert safari with quad bike, camel ride and Al Khayma Camp lists four to seven hours, depending on the option. That range may include pickup and return. It does not mean seven hours of dune driving.

Morning trips are usually easier for families who want a shorter outing. Evening versions add dinner and shows, but return later. Confirm the pickup window for your hotel and the approximate return before booking.

Dune driving is the decisive part

Dune bashing involves repeated climbs, drops and turns in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. It is not a gentle sightseeing transfer. If a child dislikes roller coasters, becomes carsick or cannot sit securely for the drive, choose a product without dune bashing or skip the safari.

For travel sickness, speak to a pharmacist or paediatrician before the holiday. We do not recommend medicines. A light meal, looking forward and telling the driver early when someone feels unwell are practical measures, not guarantees.

Age and seats must be confirmed

Operators set different minimum ages and rules for dune driving, quad bikes and buggies. Never copy an age limit from another safari. Check the participant restrictions on the exact booking page and ask in writing if a child seat or booster seat is required and provided.

A camel ride advertised in a camp package is often brief. Quad-bike options may be in a controlled area and may have separate restrictions. Read the selected option, not the most exciting photograph.

The camp is not quiet desert

Evening camps can include music, lights, food queues and performances. Families who want silence and stars should not assume a large camp provides them. Check whether dinner is shared or private, what is included, and whether you can leave early.

Who should choose something else

Skip dune driving with a child who is already anxious about the vehicle, cannot use the required restraint, or needs a predictable toilet stop. A short city boat trip or indoor attraction is not a lesser Dubai experience; it may be the better family day.

Compare Dubai desert safaris by duration and inclusions. For alternatives, see things to do in Dubai and waterpark tickets. The honest family choice is the programme that fits the child, not the one with the longest activity list.
